Sociology is the science of society. It seeks to understand the web of relationship that creates society. Social dynamics of groups, communities, organizations and institutions have been the centre of its study. Society is guided by the values and it is regulated and controlled by the norms, folkways, mores, customs and laws. Sociological study of all these institutions and agencies of social control helps in better understanding of polity and economy. Sociological principles enlighten the society and aid in the formulation of effective social policy. Sociology provides an intellectual background and skills for career in professions and business both in government and private sector. Students who study sociology:

The course aims at introducing basic concepts and sociological thinking to the students. It provides foundation to all the courses and to the subject at large. By going through this course students will be able to define Sociology and will know about the development of Sociology as an independent discipline. They will know the nature and scope of Sociology. This will acquaint them with the basic concepts like society, community, institution, association, socialization, culture and social groups, etc. They will also know about different social processes and institutions.
COURSE-2: SOCIETY IN INDIA
This course is intended to know the society in India. By studying this course students will learn about the traditional basis of Indian society. They will be acquainted with the structure of Indian society, functions of different institutions, diversity of Indian culture, processes of social stratification and social change. They will know the efforts of the government for planned social development for social justice and upliftment.
COURSE-3: SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES
Sociological theories study social phenomenon in perspective. In this course students will learn to define sociological theories, will know their characteristics and theory building process. They will be introduced to classical sociological theories and will learn the functional, conflict and action theories propounded by August Comte, Emile Durkheim, Karl Marx and Max Weber respectively. They will understand concepts like development of society, division of labour, social facts, class struggle, dialectical materialism, religion, social action theoretically.
COURSE-4: METHODS OF SOCIOLOGICAL ENQUIRY
After studying this course students will learn the scientific ways and methods of obtaining knowledge. They will learn basic concepts, objectives, steps and significance of social research. It will add to their intellectual capacities, logical thinking and critical evaluation. They will be well versed with quantitative and qualitative methods of studying social phenomenon. They will develop the writing skills.
COURSE-5: TECHNIQUES OF SOCIAL RESEARCH
This course has been designed with the objective of imparting skill and training of practical research work. It focuses on formulation of research design, method of data collection, and data analysis. It will educate students about quantitative and qualitative research. Tools and techniques of research like formulation of questionnaire, organization of interview, coding, and use of computer in research will be learned by the students.
COURSE-6: SOCIOLOGY OF ENVIRONMENT
This course will educate the students about the importance of environment for life. It will give basic knowledge about different components of environment, ecology, eco-system, and natural resources. Issues of sustainable development and over exploitation of resources and consequent effects of pollution, climate change, global warming, desertification, deforestation, soil erosion, extinction of species of plants and animals, displacement will be analysed for awareness and sensitization of the students. History of human efforts for protection of environment and conservation of resources will be known by them.
COURSE-7: SOCIAL DEMOGRAPHY
This course provides an understanding of the interaction population and society. It analyses the impact of fertility, mortality, and migration on the composition, size, and distribution of population. Students will analyse population resource debate through various theories on demography. The problem of population explosion in India and consequent problems of poverty, unemployment, over use of resources will be understood sociologically by the learners.
COURSE-8: THEORY AND PR ACTICE OF DEVELOPMENT
After going through this course students will understand the concept of development, parameters of development, relative position of countries of the world on development index. Processes of urbanization, industrialization, globalization and their impacts on society will be known by them. They will gain knowledge of different economic systems such as capitalism, socialism, and domestic mode of production. Concepts of public private partnership, built operate transfer, and knowledge society will be learned by them.
COURSE-9: MARRIAGE, FAMILY AND KINSHIP
This course will make students acquaint with the meaning, objectives, types and significance of institutions of marriage, family and kinship. It will also create an insight into the nature and impacts of changes in these institutions at recent times. They will also know various legal provisions and reforms in them.
COURSE-10: SOCIAL STRATIFICATION
Students will learn about the nature, structure and relative position of social groups in society through this course. They will know the functionalist and Marxist view of social stratification. Their knowledge of different forms of social stratification based on class, caste, gender, race and ethnicity will enhance immensely. Thsey will also know different forms of mobility, factors and impacts of social mobility.
