The Department of Music Vocal, Rajiv Gandhi Government Degree College Chaura Maidan Shimla- 04 established in 1984 with aims to train the students in the fundamentals of Music Vocal and preserve Indian Classical Music heritage. Study of the subject opens up multiple opportunities for Music Vocal Graduates. This perhaps is the most popular course in music chosen by students in the stream of music in the college. The department has been providing not only academic guidance to the students but also making them capable to performance in many competition. The department annually holds workshops, quiz competitions, activities under HPU youth Festival, SCA Oath ceremony, Prize Distribution Function and Swaranjali –Ek Prayas and many more. It has vibrant Music subject society, membership to which is compulsory for all the students.

Theory of Indian Music (General)DSE-1 AMUSA101TH	This Course aims to introduce certain key aspects of conceptual theory of Indian Music. Students will understand important definitions of Indian Music. Students will be able to understand the concepts like Jatis of Raga, Nãd – Nãd ki Jati – Tarta, Tivrata, and Gun. Students will be able to Study different Rãgas Alhaiya Bilawal, Kafi.Ãroha, Avroha, Pakad Students will know Biographies & Contributions of Tansen, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Ustad Zakir Husain, Ustad Amir Khan (Vocal). Students will develop Basic knowledge of their Instruments like Tãnpura, Sitar instrument, Tabla and Harmonium
Practical (Stage Perfoemance)DSE-2A MUSA102PR	The Course will enable the students in understanding the various aspect of stage performance. The course will develop in depth knowledge of the Indian Classical Music and Raga System. The Course will develop the sense for formation of aalap & taan in various Raga Bhairav, Kafi and Alahiya Bilawal.
Theory of IndianMusic General & Biographies DSE-1B MUSA103TH	Students will develop an understanding of general theory of Indian Music. They will be familiar with different terms of Indian Music Student will study Rãgas Yaman, Bhupali and Bihag. Student will know Biographies & Contributions of of Pt, Jaidev, Ustad Abdul Karim Khan Pt. Bhatkhande and Pt. Ravi Shankar. Students will develop the basic knowledge of their Instruments like Sitar and Tabla.
Practical (Viva-Voce)DSE-2BMUSA104PR	 This course is designed to give the students a sense of critical analysis regarding ragas.  The Course will develop in depth knowledge of the Indian Classical Music and Raga System.  The paper will develop the sense for formation of aalap & taan in various Raga Yaman, Bhupali and Bihag .
AncientGranthas & contributions of Musicologists DSE-1C MUSA201TH	The course aims to study the Ancient Granthas & contributions of Musicologists of Indian Music. Students will develop a sense of general theory of Indian Music. They will be familiar with Indian Music granths like Natyashastra, Sangeet Ratnakar and Vrihdeshi granthas. The students will be able to compare the Notation System Bhatkhande & Vishnu Digamber Paddhati . Student will know biographies & contributions of of Swami Tyagraja, Pt. Sharang dev.

The paper will develop the sense for formation of aalap & taan in various Raga Maru Bihag, Malkouns and Vrindavani Sarang. The students will be able to Recite the Theka of Taal Chautãla,Dhamar, Rupak and Jhaptaal along with Dugun, Tigun and Chaugun.
Medieval Granthas & Contribu Of Musicians DSE-1D MUSA203TH	The course aims to study the Medieval Granthas & contributions of Musician of Indian Music. After completing the course students will develop an understanding of general theory Indian Music. They will be familiar with Indian Music granths like of Sangeet-Parijat and Swarmel Kalanidhi Granthas and Chaturdandi Prakshika granthas. The students will be able to understand the Time Theory of Ragas Known as Rãgaon ka Samay Siddhant. Student will know biographies & Contributions of of Vidushi Kishori Amonkar, Pt.Nikhil Banerjee and Ud Vilayat Khan.

Theory of Indian Music and Study of ancient Granthsand Ragas Vocal/Inst DSE-1A (Unit-1) MUSA303TH	The course aims to study the Ancient Granthas & I ndain Music. After completing the course students will develop an understanding of Folk music of H.P and Modren Trends in Music. They will be familiar with time theory in Hindustani Classical Music and its relevance in Indian Music. The students will be able to compare Gram, Murchanna as treated in Natya Shastra and itsrelevance in present context. Student will know stringed instrument used in Hindustani Classical Music.

The course will develop in depth knowledge of the Indian Classical Music and Khyal Singing style and Dhrupad Singing Style . The paper will develop the sense for formation of aalap & taan in various Raga Todi, Bhairvi and Darbari Kanhra. The students will be able to Recite the Theka of Taal Chautãla,Dhamar, Rupak and Jhaptaal along with Dugun, Tigun and Chaugun.
Theory of Indian Music and Ghrana Tradition Vocal/Inst DSE-1B MUSA305TH	The course aims to study the theory of Indian Music and Gharana Tradition. After completing the course students will develop an understanding of Gharana prampara of Hindustani Music. They will be familiar with different forms of Music – Thumri, Tappa, Dadra, Chaturung. The students will be able to compare Gram, Murchanna as treated in NatyaShastra and itsrelevance in present context. Student will know basic knowledge of percussion instruments used in classical musicTabla & Pakkawaj used in Hindustani Classical Music.
Practical , Hindustani Music (Vocal/Inst) DSE-1B MUSA306PR	The course will enable students in understanding the aspect of complate performance. The course will develop in depth knowledge of the Indian Classical Music and Khayal Singing style and Shabad/Bhajan Singing Style . The course will develop the sense of the formation of aalap & taan in various Raga Bhimplasi, Des and Puriya Dhanashree. The students will be able to Recite the Theka of Taal Chautãla,Dhamar, Rupak and Jhaptaal along with Dugun, Tigun and Chaugun.
MUSA205PR SEC	The students will be able to understanding various parts of Tanpura/Sitar and the technique of tuning it. The students will be able to make presentation of Vocal and Instrumental Music in group such as folk or tribal Music, Light Music, Classical ragas based on film songs.
MUSA206PR SEC	The students will be able to play thekas of following Talas on Tabla -Teental, Kaherwa. The students will be able to understand the operating sound system. The students will be able to make the report/Review of the attended classical concerts/Music festivals.
MUSA301PR SEC	The students will be able to make the power point presentation on the Contemporary Classical Music Performance. The students will be able to understand Basic technique of Harmonium and Tabla Playing. Visit to All India Radio/ Doordarshan, State festival and TV Channels.
MUSA302PR SEC	The students will be able to compose Music for Patriotic songs. The students will be able to make the power point presentation on the Life and Contributions of great Musicians. The students will be able to make the writing reviews or reports on attanded Music Conferences/Listening of Radio Sangeet Sammelans and listening of Audio/Visual adds National Programmes of Music.
Theory of Indian Music and Folk Music of Himachal Pradesh GE-1 MUSA307TH	The students will be able to understand Folk songs of Himachal Pradesh and knowledge of Folk instruments like Ransingha, Nagara, Shehnai, Karnal. Student will know the biographies of the Musicians of Himachal PradeshPt. Som Dutt Battu, Hetram Tanwar, Kashmiri Lal Student will learn about different Ragas with illustrations like Bhairav, Yaman. and Talas with their divisions:-Teentaal, Dadra
PRACTICAL GE-2 MUSA308PR	Student of Instrumenatal will learn Aaroh, Avroh and Pakad in both the ragas.Basic strokes of sitar.Five Alankars based on stroke patterns.One Razakhani Gat/Drut Gat in any of the Prescribed ragas.Elementary knowledge of Jhala playing This Course will enable students of Music Vocal to understand Aaroh, Avroh and Pakad in both the ragas. Knowledge of voice culture. Five Alankars. One SwarMalika/Drutkhayal in any of the prescribed ragas.Variety of Taan patterns.
