The Department of English RGGDC Chaura Maidan is one of the premier centres of Language and Literature in the state. Established in the year 1984, it offers disciplines ranging from British Literature to Indian Writing and from American Literature to Postcolonial Literatures. The department boasts of subjects like Literature from Himachal and Women Empowerment thus educating young minds about the rich cultural heritage of the state. It has a well-equipped Language Lab with multi-media audio-visual systems and computers. The department is one of the only two government degree colleges in the state that offers Honours courses in English ehich was started in the year 2017-2018. It also caters to the needs of language-teaching of various other social science, science departments and professional courses of the college. The Department’s general commitment to fostering critical thinking and communication skills, among other transferable life skills, in addition to the pursuit of the academic study of the English language and its diverse literary traditions the world over, goes a long way towards equipping its students for diverse career paths in the global job market.
The Department organizes curricular and extra-curricular activities for the students, including Quiz Contests, Seminars, Declamation Contests, Group Discussions and annual play productions. The English literary society organises regular Symposiums and conferences and talks by Academicians and scholars.
The faculty of the Department is actively engaged in research pursuits and members have authored several books and research papers. The faculty includes several highly visible academics who have won awards for their research, teaching as well as their contribution towards social work such as the Bharat Gaurav award for education Excellence organised by the global society for Health and Education growth, the Indian Women Empowerment award organised by the Achiever’s association for economic research and development, New Delhi, the Women Power Award in 2021 on International Women’s Day presented by the department of language, Art, and Culture for her research work on Folk Theatres of Himachal Pradesh.
The department actively organises Tree Plantation and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Cleanliness Drives, Gender Sensitisation, and women Empowerment campaigns. Student Excursions are regular initiatives of the Department.
The Department is committed to the pursuit of excellence in education, innovative pedagogy, and character building. In other words, it focuses on infusing a sense of social responsibility and community life among all its learners. The Department also works towards honing communicative-rhetorical skills, humanist aptitude, and cultural disposition through relevant interventions in English language and literature studies.
