Library Services

Library is the vital and integral part of an academic institution. Rajiv Gandhi Government College, Chaura Maidan, Shimla has a well-established Library catering the needs and requirements of more than 3500 students on daily basis. The college library was established in the year 1984. Earlier the library was situated in the old building of the College. In August, 2008, the Library was shifted to its new premises. At Present the Library is fully automated. The Library was being automated under Utkrisht Mahavidyalaya Grant 2021-22 with RFID technology and start functioning in 2023. The Library has a Collection of more than 14000 books stacked in 101 almirahs. The sitting facilities for students and faculty members have been provided. The Library provides 12 Newspapers (06 English + 06 Hindi) on daily basis. 10 magazines are being subscribed (07 English + 03 Hindi) for the students to upgrade their general knowledge and to prepare for competitive exams . 06 Computers with internet access has been installed in the College Library for the students and 05 Computers for the staff where users can access e-resources. The library is open on all working days from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Faculty and students have free access to both conventional as well as electronic resources.
College is a member of National Library and information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content (N- List) being jointly run by UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium , INFIBNET Centre, Ahmadabad and INDEST –AICET Consortium , IIT Delhi . This Project provides free access to more than 31, 35000+ full texts e-books and 9000 e-journals on all the subjects to the faculty member, researchers and students. New academic e-resources are being added to this faculty every month . The Students and faculty members willing to avail this facility may register themselves in the college library. The library is now fully automated with RFID technology that works on the principle of exchange of radio signals between the identification medium and a RFID reader with a combination at microchip and radio frequency technology. In this system the library members can itself issue and return the books. 13927 books have been tagged and registered into the system. The system include:

Objectives of the Library:.

Rules and Regulations

Only members are allowed to use the library on production of valid ID card issued by the college.

  • Library cards are not transferable.i>
  • Marking or defacing library resources is strictly prohibited.
  • Use of mobile phone is prohibited in the library. Mobile phones should be kept under silent mode in the library.
  • Students must not leave any book, borrowed for reading or lending purpose, on the reading desks. They must submit the books in the circulation counter before leaving the library.
  • The students/staff will deposit their personal belongings except notebook at the property counter.
  • Students/staff shall not leave Valuables in the bags they deposit at the Property-Counter. The College and Library shall not take any responsibility for the loss of any such item.
  • Marking, underlining, doodling or defacing any Books, Newspapers, Magazines, etc. of the library prohibited.
  • Students can avail borrowing facility of two books against their library cards for a period of two weeks. An overdue charge of Rs.1/-will be collected for each day the books are kept over-time.
  • The borrowers shall be solely responsible for the safety/ preservation of the books loaned by him /her
  • Reference Books are to be consulted in the library only after taking permission from the college Librarian / Asstt. Librarian.
  • Students are required to check the physical condition of the books they intend to borrow from the Library. In case any book is found tampered with the pages in any form, the students will have to replace the book with the new and with the latest edition.
  • In case a book is found mutilated torn defaced or misplaced the actual cost of the book plus 20% of the printed price /cost of book will be charged from such defaulters readers.

Library Services and Facilities
Reading Room
The college library provide reading room facility to students and staff member . The library have separate staff reading room with a capacity 10 reader and a hall for students that has capacity for about 200 users .
Current Awareness Service ( C.A.S .)
The newly arrived books list are displayed and CAS is also provided from the newspaper press cutting , relevant portions of magazines and books etc, Personal Assistance and guidance is provided to the readers if required to make the best use of the library collection .
Library Membership
All the students on the roles of college are eligible to become members of college library.
Book Bank Service
The College also maintains a Book Bank from which text books are loaned to Poor and needy students of all categories on security basis,(i.e actual cost+20% and maintenance charge of RS.2/- per book)
