VISION

To create a centre of academic excellence in education and research with the purpose of fulfilling the society requirements through holistic development of the future generation who possess the right knowledge, skill sets and attitude towards their work and life.

MISSION

To disseminate knowledge among the students with a strong focus on character building and all round personality development to create responsible citizens of the world. To aspire and strive for excellence in education and develop research attitude among the students, sharpen the intellectual potential of learners and to work for the welfare and prosperity of society and nation.
Rajiv Gandhi Government Degree College, Shimla, occupies a strategic position in higher education in terms of providing academic lead and administrative facilitation to the teachers and students. The BCA Department was established in 2010 and PGDCA in 2019. The department aims to nurture IT professionals with a high level of knowledge and competence to effectively contribute to the society with commitment and integrity. The department has a strength of about one hundred and twenty students in BCA and forty in PGDCA. Five faculty members are teaching in B.C.A. and PGDCA program. The dedicated faculty, which is a perfect blend of experience and youth, always aims at all round development of students.

PLAN

To promote research among the staff and students and arrange small projects and assignments based on syllabus to create research aptitude in students.
To organize more and more visits to the IT companies.
To organize training programs for students.

ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT BY THE DEPARTMENT

1. Group Work/ Co-operative Learning

Students are made to work in small groups and are given assignments and projects. They are encouraged to develop critical thinking skills. Group discussions are also held on various topics to help students develop communicative and analytical skills.

2. Power Point Presentations

Students are encouraged to prepare Power point presentations that helps develop confidence and speaking skills. Presentations with visual aid are more interesting and persuasive and motivate students to learn.

3. Technology & Research

An effort is also made to promote research insight among the students. The students carry out research projects in final semester. This would help those students who wish to pursue higher studies and research.

4. Community Service

This is a practice continuously carried out. Our students are actively involved in various community outreach activities through NSS & NCC.

5. Career Guidance and Placement Talks

Career guidance and placement talks are organized every year. The students are made aware of the various career opportunities in the field of Data Science, Cyber Security and IT.

6. Field Visits

The students are also taken on field visits with the objective of enhancing their critical thinking skills through direct personal experiences.

Specific Learning Outcomes

Mathematics-I (BCA 0101)

Student will develop understanding of fundamental concepts of Sets, relations functions, matrices, trigonometric functions and integrals. These concepts serve as the building blocks for various computer science topics.
Students will learn how to approach and solve complex problems of trigonometric functions.
Student will gain knowledge of coordinate system, lines and circles. They will understand how to formulate the problems associated with the concept.
Student will develop a thorough understanding of differential calculus , including concepts such as limit, derivatives and integration.

BCA0102 Applied English

Ability to use receptive skills through reading and listening to acquire good exposure to language and literature.
Ability to write and speak good English in all situations.
Ability to write paragraphs, essays, and letters.
Ability to trace the difference of pronunciation of words, their correct pronunciation, accent and intonation.

BCA-0103 Computer Fundamentals

Have an understanding of basic concepts of a computer system.

BCA-0104 C Programming

At the end of Semester the student will be able to C programming Concepts with programming logic and details, which will be very essential part of the course of any programming language.

BCA-0105 Office Automation Tools

Understand the functions and characteristics of MS-DOS.
Run Internal and external commands in MS-DOS.
Understand operating system and & file system basics.
Use and work with Windows: accessories/ programs & system tools
Create, edit and printing a document/ page /presentation/ excel sheets in MS-Office.
Use MS-Office professionally.

BCA-0201 Mathematics –II

Student will develop solid understanding of fundamental concepts of algebra such as groups, rings and fields. These concepts serve as the building blocks for computer science courses.
Student will learn to implement basic theorems such as Rolle’s Theorem, Lagrange’s theorem and Cauchy’s theorem.
Student will develop problem solving skills of in the field of congruences.

BCA-0202 Communicative English

To enhance the learner’s communication skills by giving adequate exposure in reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.
To help the learner get rid of his present flaws and mistakes in pronunciation and grammar.
To build up the learners confidence in oral and interpersonal communication by reinforcing the basics of pronunciation specially focusing on interviews / corporate meetings / international business travels.

BCA-0203 Digital Electronics

Understand the fundamental concepts of semiconductor devices and techniques used in digital electronics.
Ability to analyze different types of digital electronic circuit using logic gates, Boolean laws and algebra ,K-map and logical tools and know the techniques to prepare the most simplified circuit using various mapping and mathematical methods.
The ability to understand, analyze and design various combinational and sequential circuits and identify basic requirements for a design application and propose a cost effective solution.

BCA-0204 Data Structures

At the end of semester the student get the combination of C Programming and Data Structure with algorithms and their complexities. Different types of data structure they can follow the C language and Data Structure combination with time space trade-off situation

BCA-0205 Database Management System

Understand the basic concepts and the application of database systems.
Draw Entity-Relationship diagrams to represent simple database application scenarios.
Understand the Relational database design principles.
Familiar with the database storage structures and access techniques.
Discuss normalization techniques with simple examples.
Familiar with the MS-Access user interface.

BCA-0301 Mathematics-III

Student will develop a strong understanding of concepts of finite fields and techniques of differential and complex analysis.
Student will understand how to translate practical problems into mathematical equations, apply differential and complex analysis to solve them.
Student will develop problem solving skills of in the field of modular arithmetic.

BCA-0302 Business Practices and Management

The Course will provide basic knowledge about organization and management of business enterprises to the students.
It will also familiarize the students with different forms of business enterprises, their features and limitations.
It will also give a brief overview of the functional areas of Management-Marketing, Finance and Human Resource.

BCA-0303 Computer Organization

At the end of semester and this course students are able to hardware structure and its components which is related to software also, computer organization where how information is organized in computer, instructions , errors and types of busses, interrupts occurs in hardware and software.

BCA-0304 Object Oriented programming with C++

Understand the difference between Object Oriented Programming and procedural programming approach
Understand the principles of object, class, data abstraction, inheritance and polymorphism in application development.
Learn the concept data hiding with classes and object, inheritance and types, reusability of code, virtual functions and polymorphism.

BCA-0305 Desktop Publishing and Designing

Understand the basic concept and use of Desktop Publishing.
Understand the types and working of printers.
Familiar about the basic page design and layout of page.
Define various versions, concepts and application of Page Maker.
Use Adobe Page Maker professionally.

BCA-0401 Personnel Management

To enable the students to understand Personnel Management and system at various levels in general and in certain specific industries or organizations.
To help the students focus on and analyse the issues and strategies required to select and develop manpower resources.
To develop relevant skills necessary for application in Management related issues.
To Enable the students to integrate the understanding of various Management concepts along with the domain concept in order to take correct business decisions.

BCA-0402 Accounting

The students will learn the concepts and principles of Accounting and get an understanding of Indian Accounting Standards and International Financial Reporting Standards.
They will acquire conceptual knowledge of Financial Accounting and impart practical skills for recording various kinds of business transactions.
The students will acquire practical knowledge and technical expertise in maintaining books of accounts.
It will provide a thorough knowledge and understanding of the accounting practices prevailing in the commercial market and will also be introduced to computerized accounting system.

BCA-0403 System Analysis and Design

Understand System Concepts and Use within the Industry Understand System Analysis and Design.
Understand how the Requirements are gathered from different sources.
Explain the basic concepts of SDLC.
Explain the importance of feasibility study in a system.
Familiar with System testing and its types and importance of testing.

BCA-0404 Internet Technology and Web Page Designing

At the end of semester student will be able to design a web page , linking schemes and web site designing with static pages and dynamic web pages interconnectivity with the server side.

BCA-0405 Programming in Visual Basic

Have an understanding of visual studio and features of visual basic.
Design a web form using various Visual Basic controls.
Write visual basic code in modules and classes.
Have an understanding of exception handling and validation of data.
Have an understanding of arrays and its applications.

BCA-0501 Operating System

Understand the importance of software, its types, Functions, Services and structure of Operating Systems.
Understand processes, threads, schedulers and explanation of CPU scheduling.
Understand the concept of Deadlock and related problems, their characterization, handling of deadlock, deadlock prevention, detection, and recovery.

BCA-0502 E-Commerce

This course will equip the students with knowledge about the mechanism for conducting business transactions through electronic means.
The students will get an understanding about internet trading, relationships including business to consumers, business to business, intra-organisational.

BCA-0503 Management Information System

At the end of semester student will be able to understand the subject, how it affects management with computer science, how the information gets processed. Now students are easily recognized software and hardware selection in the field of computers by using management. Role of management information system in the field of computer science.

BCA-0504 ASP.Net Technologies

Understand Microsoft .Net Framework and ASP.Net web forms.
Design a web form using various VB.Net controls.
Create a namespace and assembly.
Have an understanding of HTML and web server controls.
Have an understanding of various list controls, validation controls and user controls

BCA-0505 Computer Oriented Statistical Methods

Student will develop a solid understanding of fundamental statistical concepts including measure of central tendency, variability, probability and correlation analysis.They will learn how to apply these concepts in various contexts.
Students will acquire skills in collecting, organizing and analyzing data using statistical techniques.
Student will learn to construct and interpret statistical models to analyze relationship between variables.
Student will develop skills in interpreting and presenting statistical findings. They will learn how to effectively communicate statistical results through written reports, charts and graphs.

BCA-0601 Computer Networks

At the end of semester student will be able to understand the subject, with presently using networking equipments and devices. Medias using communication, Switching Schemes, Different Models , IPv4 and iPv6 addressing schemes, TCP/IP Models , ISO-OSI models, topologies.

BCA-0602 Numerical Methods

Student will develop a comprehensive understanding of various numerical techniques used for solving mathematical problems that are computationally difficult.
Student will understand the sources and types of errors that arise when using numerical methods.

BCA-0603 Multimedia Technology

Understand basic concept multimedia.
Identify five multimedia components.
Familiar with Multimedia Hardware and Software.
Understand how to use text- related element in multimedia design correctly.
Differentiate between vector and bitmap graphics.
Understand about audio digitization, audio file format and audio software.
Understand about digital video standards, format and technology.

BCA-0604 Computer Graphics

Have knowledge and understanding of computer graphics system, its application areas and types, graphics display devices and input devices.

To make the students familiar with geometric transformation techniques (2-D),composite transformation , viewing and clipping algorithms.

BCA-0605 Software Engineering

CAREER OPTIONS

Technical Analyst

It is one of the most interesting job options after the BCA course. The responsibilities include executing IT procedures and systems to enhance efficiency and suggesting economical and cost-effective technological applications. Data Scientist
After the BCA course, it is a much-desired job, with the field growing by leaps and bounds. However, certain additional certifications like data visualization, big data, and predictive analysis are needed apart from the BCA degree to enter this job.

Web Developer

This job can be opted for by BCA graduates as a solid career choice and mainly involves creating and maintaining websites. Additional certifications and skills like JavaScript, HTML, PHP, and CSS are required to get better job offers in the field.

Digital Marketer

With the digital marketing field growing with long strides, it provides a plethora of opportunities for BCA graduates. The roles and responsibilities include web content optimization, marketing analytics, and search engine optimization.

Software Developer Trainee

It is an entry-level job position for BCA graduates, where the trainee is responsible for creating and maintaining software applications while also learning and gaining hands-on experience in different computer programming languages.

Cyber Security Expert

It is a much sought-after job for many BCA graduates with the job role concerned with networking, application, and maintaining data security using sophisticated software and tools. With a few additional certifications, the opportunities will open up even further.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Tie-ups with good Companies for Campus Placements will be greatly beneficial to the students. An offer letter from a company, while the students are still in the campus, takes a lot of worries off their shoulders. This will also help the college increase the number of admissions to the courses after which campus placements are given.

CONCLUSION

The departmental performance of this academic year 2022–23 has significantly improved from that of the previous year. Many innovative and interdisciplinary methods of teaching were adopted. Every technique used was centred on active learning, including techniques for engaging students in discussions, active note-taking, visual aids, and other techniques for student involvement. Presentations using PowerPoint were more convincing and successful. The confidence of the students increased. However, some students need to gain proficiency using PowerPoint. There is also tendency among students to rely too much on slides, ignoring the verbal presentation. This is troublesome for the verbal presentation since students need to learn how to communicate study material verbally without visuals. Power point should only be used sparingly and for a select few topics and examples. It is important to teach students to take into account alternative visual aids. And most importantly students should be taught to build their own ethos. Seminars proved very informative. It helped the students to convey their own ideas to classmates and teachers, thus the students who handled seminars, got a chance to collect more information on the respective topics and learn more about the subject. Students gain confidence by participating in a seminar and giving a presentation in front of the teacher and other students. They can also develop their presentation skills by learning from their errors. For the upcoming session, departmental targets and objectives have been set. The continual goal will be to broaden students' horizons by promoting their involvement in innovative, interdisciplinary learning processes. And last but certainly not the least to make research and teaching more socially relevant.
