Brief Profile of the Department

Established in the year 1984, the Department of Economics offers economics courses to students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) degrees from the institution. In the year 2013, on the directions of the Himachal Pradesh University, the department starts offering a bachelor's degree in arts with economics as a major or minor subject under the choice-based credit system. After the adoption of the UGC-based ChoiceBased Credit System by the Himachal Pradesh University, the programme structure and curriculum of the department underwent major changes in the year 2016. The curriculum of the department was again changed in the year 2018, with Himachal Pradesh University shifting from a semester to an annual system. At present, the department of Economics offers an undergraduate programme of Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) with economics as a major or minor subject. The courses offered by the department of economics inculcate employability skills and enhance the critical thinking and cognitive skills of the students, by integrating values and entrepreneurial skill.

At present, more than 300 students, from both the arts and business streams, are enrolled in the department. All students registered in the department who have economics as a major or minor subject of study are eligible to join the department's active subject society “Kotshera Economics Society (KES)”. The KES organises competitions, seminars, and workshops on current economic issues for students.

The "Planning Forum" section of the college magazine provides an opportunity for students to express their views and opinions on contemporary economic issues. Students actively contribute articles to the section, with one of the students acting as the student editor.

During graduation, the students are also encouraged to undertake small research-based assignments. The aim of these projects is to provide exposure to students about the basics of research, such as questionnaire preparation, data collection, data handling, data analysis, and report writing.

With the assistance of committed faculty members, the department strives for excellence in teaching, learning, and research. The department's faculty members work very hard to maintain good academic record. Additionally, they actively participate in the publication of research papers, faculty development programs, orientation programs, seminars, conferences, etc., in addition to providing the institution with full involvement, dedication, and commitment in a variety of capacities.
