Department of Botany in Rajiv Gandhi Govt. Degree College, Chaura Maidan came into existence in 1984 with the introduction of Bachelor of Science stream. As Botany deals with the study of different processes going on in plants, the course in Botany encourages students to keep abreast of as many developments as possible in Plant Sciences. Studies in Classical Botany deal with plant diversity, morphology, anatomy,taxonomy, systematic,physiology, embryology, ecology, genetics, economic botany, etc. and provide solutions to agricultural, horticultural and environmental problems. By the study of the fundamental details of plants, students can understand growth and development, reproduction, life cycle, medicinal values and economic importance of plants. This course being an important component of Life Sciences offers immense opportunities in other related fields and applied disciplines such as Biotechnology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Genomics, plant breeding and many others. Department of Botany also offers some ability enhancement courses, such as biofertilizer production, gardening and floriculture, ethnobotany and medicinal plants and Mushroom cultivation technology keeping in view of self employability of students. While studying Botany the students learn all these aspects of plants including its applications. Besides, the students will have greater opportunities open to them in higher studies and research along with better job prospects.

Program Outcomes of B.Sc. with Botany

- Intellectual skills:Students will be able to think logically and organize tasks into a structured form, assimilate knowledge and ideas, conduct and write a report on an independent term project.
- Practical skills:Students learn to carry out practical work, in the field and in the laboratory, interpreting plantmorphology and anatomy, plant identification, vegetation analysis techniques.
- Scientific Knowledge:students will apply the knowledge of basic science, lifesciences and fundamental process of plants to study and analyze anyplant form. They will apply modern techniques and instruments for Biochemical estimation, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Plant Tissue culture experiments, cellular and physiological studies of plants with anunderstanding of the applications in human life.
- Problem analysis skill:students will be able to identify and analyze various problems associated with plant sciences and environment withsubstantiated conclusions.They will apply the knowledge gained from the studies for the upliftment of society via addressinghealth, environmental issues, food scarcity etc.
- Cognitive Skill:Students will be able to get the knowledge and understanding ofbasic science, life sciences and fundamental process of plants, the range of microbial and plant diversity in terms of structure, function and environmental relationships. Students will be able to evaluate the plant diversity and plant diseases caused by various pathogens, plant classification and the knowledge of flora of Shimla, the role of plants in the functioning of the global ecosystem,understanding of plant diversity and its importance in the maintenance of ecological balance.
- Design/development of solutions: students will be able to design solutions from economic/medicinal plants for health problems, disorders and disease of human beings and estimate the phytochemical content of plants which meet the specified needs to appropriate consideration for the public health
- Conduct investigations of complex problems: Learners will use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and development of the information to provide valid conclusions.
- Modern instruments usage: Students will Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern instruments and equipments for Biochemical estimation, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Plant Tissue culture experiments, cellular and physiological activities of plants with an understanding of the application and limitations.
- Self employment: student can set up small industries in the field of biofertilizer, gardening and floriculture, plant tissue culture, ethnobotany and medicinal plants, and mushroom cultivation.
- Environment and sustainability: students will be able to understand the impact of the plant diversity in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of and need for sustainable development. They will apply ethical principles and commit to environmental ethics and responsibilities and norms of the biodiversity conservation.
